The Eight Parts of Speech

  • Noun: a name of a person, place or thing. Example: Karachi, book, teacher.
  • Pronoun: used in place of a noun. Example: he, she, it, they.
  • Verb: an action or state. Example: run, is, think.
  • Adjective: describes a noun. Example: tall, blue, honest.
  • Adverb: describes a verb, adjective or another adverb. Example: quickly, very.
  • Preposition: shows relation. Example: in, on, under, between.
  • Conjunction: joins words or sentences. Example: and, but, because.
  • Interjection: shows sudden feeling. Example: Oh! Wow!

The same word can be different parts of speech depending on how it is used. Understanding these helps you build correct sentences.
