The Human Digestive System

Overview

The digestive system breaks food into small, soluble substances that the body can absorb and use for energy, growth and repair.

The Journey of Food
  • Mouth: teeth chew food and saliva begins digesting starch.
  • Oesophagus: pushes food down to the stomach.
  • Stomach: acids and enzymes break down proteins.
  • Small intestine: most digestion and absorption of nutrients happens here.
  • Large intestine: absorbs water and forms waste.
